  1. Scott Joplin was a very talented pianist. Usually in the morning when I read your blog, I put on some jazz or other music to listen to as I peruse various internet sites.

    1. My mother was a very accomplished pianist (still is, but age has limited her repertoire some) and growing up she was always playing this as a practice piece. Pleasant memories there.

  2. A very nice arrangement of The Entertainer from George Shearing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e19Es6UETDo

For anyone interested in a more comprehensive reading of Joplin, I heartily recommend Scott Joplin: Piano Rags by the marvelous Joshua Rifkin (I grew up with the vinyl recordings – 3 volumes – which influenced my nascent jazz addiction). I think all of it’s available online these days. Sans the vinyl however, you miss Rifkin’s exhaustive liner notes – in addition to being an accomplished classical player, he’s an equally (if not more) accomplished scholar who had Joplin in his crosshairs once upon a time. Here’s Rifkin playing Joplin’s breakout hit, The Maple Leaf Rag: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rad6UvoGHV8.

And one of the loveliest pieces written by Joplin or anyone else (Rifkin again), Solace – A Mexican Serenade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KsF8-32rwI
