Following on from yesterday’s post about that island off Miami, here’s an alternative:
As a former city boy, I have to say that I wouldn’t be averse to this kind of setup — just not in NYfC. The thought of restaurants and stores being just an elevator ride away… yeah, I could do it.
And as for the inevitable “privacy” complaints: acceptance of its loss is just part of the compromise one makes when deciding to live downtown.
Put it next to a lake in a mountain valley with no people anywhere nearby and I’d like it. As is, I hate cities. Too many people, too much traffic, too much noise, too many panhandlers, grifters, and whack-jobs.
I hate cities. If I had a choice I’d have a compound somewhere surrounded by concertina wire and a moat with alligators. Maybe a minefield.
“Hell is other people”.
There are a number of those types of rooftop Gardens / Decks and Apartments here in the city of Boston. Apparently they are quite popular ( and typically expensive), the downside is that they are still in the city and now very visible to the ” Tax the Rich and anything else ” Mayor.
I’ll stick with my 4 acres of wooded suburbs where I can’t see my neighbors houses and I personally know all the Selectmen that run my small town.
The convenience of walking to shops and restaurants can be very appealing. A nice walk is always enjoyable. In older age, walking is important since you keep using your muscles which prevents muscle loss and exercise can help stave off osteoporosis. The downside like other people have said are noise, other people, lack of space and such.
