Getty Images filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Wednesday, marking a major reset after its planned merger with rival Shutterstock collapsed under the weight of heavy debt and growing competition from AI-generated imagery.

I’ve crossed swords with these motherfuckers for decades.  They act as fearless protectors of copyright, whereas in fact they’re nothing more than a wannabe-monopolistic bunch of thugs who first harvest up “clients” (purported creators of images), then set about threatening anyone who dares to publish a pic, with assorted legal penalties.

Here’s the fact of the matter.  Every time I get one of these threatening letters, my first response is to ask for proof that they are indeed the agents of said copyright holders, and not just claiming to be such.

I have never, not once, been given any proof thereof.

So I ignore all future communications from them and their lawyers.

What makes Getty’s bankruptcy all the more delicious is this:

“…growing competition from AI-generated imagery.”

You mean images such as these?

All the above came from some crowd named seeart.ai.

And just for the hell of it, here’s a non-A.I. pic of the above subject (and no, I could find no proof of copyright, either on the pic itself or at the location where I found it):

Man, I loved the 1970s…
