Excuses, Excuses

Whenever I get these upper-respiratory infections (about every nine months or so, it seems), the physical ailments (hacking cough, wheezing, nasal clogging etc.) are bad, but what really screws me up is the physical and mental lassitude that occurs not only during the illness, but persists for days and days thereafter.

Hence the paucity and dare I say crappy quality of the posts over the past couple of weeks, for which I am truly sorry.

It’s not only that:  to give you another example, my half-dozen per-month range visits have dwindled, in the past couple of weeks, to zero.  I think I’m going to get a call from Texas Legends any day now, asking if I’m okay.

I don’t even have the energy to drive over to pick up Rx refills from the drugstore, even though the on-hand supplies are dwindling fast.

We had dinner at Doc Russia’s place last Sunday night — our first dinner together in ages.  Normally, our dinners last well into the night, involving much food, drink, conversation and general merrymaking.  This time, after barely a couple of hours, I had to call it quits, an indecently-short time after dinner.  Never had a drop to drink, either.

All of which is my way of saying that this website has sucked over the past couple of weeks, and I know it.

I’m slowly — far too slowly — starting to get better, proof of which is that I actually took out the range bag yesterday and loaded it up with ammo for some testing I’ve been meaning to do.  (In case you’re curious:  the difference in felt recoil between .357 Mag, .38 +P and regular .38 Special loads across a couple-three revolvers of different brand and barrel lengths.)

I don’t know if I’ll make it to the range today — I really have to get those meds refilled, and I’m not sure I have the energy for two trips.  Following my semi-annual visit to the eyedoc two days ago, I also need to get new lenses for my failing eyesight;  fuck knows when I’m going to get round to that, but I really need to be able to read things like street signs and such.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to unload all this shit on you;  but you, my Loyal Readers, deserve some explanations for the website suckage of the past couple of weeks:  and there they are.

I’ll be posting at intervals over the next few days as the energy provides, just not in a five-minute post-midnight tranche as usual.  Bear with me.

  1. Kim, concentrate on getting better. We’ll wait. Can I recommend a hot lemon and honey drink? Juice and flesh of one lemon in hot water to which add a spoonful of honey and a dram – or two – of Scottish whisky.

  2. Rest up. We’ll be here when you feel stronger. If I remember correctly you are pushing 70. Us senior gents just don’t bounce back like we used to.

  3. Kim, Kim, Kim, Kim – you must not worry about such things – we all wait with bated breath for your next missive so get well soon. We ain’t going nowhere.

    Whilst not a medic myself, I can definitely recommend the restorative powers of a Greggs sausage roll or several – there are 20 Greggs within 10 miles of this olde homestead and one within 500 yards. Washed down with a lovely 6X. Would do you a power of good. Oh but wait, I forgot, yer over THAT side of the pond. Silly me.

    Probably best not to say we’re off to Aldworth at the weekend, to see if their beer has improved. Via a great independent Butcher in Pangbourne – you know, the place where you ‘open the window and smell the money, honey’

  4. No complaints about the free ice cream here. Becoming ye olde pharte ain’t for the weak so take care of yourself. Not far behind you so I’ll follow while you break trail. :-}

  5. I have blogs which I have read for many, many years, yours included. sadly, some have passed, and are missed. Others, as the years have passed, are down to posting only every couple weeks, or on a monthly basis. Sadly, it is a function of increasing years.

    I know what you’re dealing with. germs we used to laugh at seem to be coming at us with war clubs and bad intentions. There’s no getting past it, we’re getting old and the world is out to kill us off to make way or the younger and stronger. Your job, our jobs, is to take care of ourselves so we can continue to pass our wisdom on to the knuckleheads who will someday leave us for the wolves.

    Take your meds, get plenty of rest, and pace yourself. You have a long way to go still.
