I have the same thought about this as I do about the catalytic converter thefts here – who the hell is buying the scrap? Does the railroad get a phone call from 1-900-scrap-dealer and they say “hey, what are the odds, we just came into 10 km of rail, do you want to buy it back. Err, I mean buy it to replace what was stolen?”
Shady workshops with smelters that smelt the metals down into bars or rolls which then get mixed in with legally acquired batches and sold on with fake documentation.
Same with the large scale copper thieves in Europe who destroy electrical and signal cables, crack open transformer stations to steal the copper wire in there, steal the copper plated roofs of churches, etc. etc.
They’ve even stolen the bronze bells out of church steeples.
Every person helping the thieves should be strung up and left to rot.
I would have loved to have a seat on the sidelines, just to see how they accomplished this.
It looks like this was done using specialized equipment. Notice that was not much damage done to the ties or the Ballast ( The stone bed that surrounds the ties ). Lengths of rail are really heavy, normally handled with a large Crain mounted on a rail car

10 Kilometers of Main Line rail is 1.4 million Kg or 3 million pounds of American steel , not something you throw in the back of your pickup to take to the junkyard.

In 1972, I actually saw a black group using a sledge, stacked with all their possessions, pulled by a yoke of oxen along a paved road in Swaziland. I guess using the wheel would be cultural appropriation or acting white.
Val, that may be an anachronism by now: I very much doubt that there are any paved roads left in Swaziland.
I wouldn’t be surprised. I don’t recall whether it was there or later in Mozambique the road ran through bush country for what seemed like forever, and most of it was only one narrow lane of very alligatored asphalt, with a red dirt shoulder on each side about 4′-6′ wide with dense stands of medium-sized trees and thick underbrush beyond that. The deal for a car coming the other way was you put 2 wheels in the dirt and he’d do likewise on his side as you passed one another.
I was warned by my friends the deal didn’t apply if the oncoming car, especially if it was a Mercedes, had a license plate beginning with “M” (Mozambique). Unless you wanted to play chicken with some macho Portuguese guy going 80mph, you put your whole car on the dirt shoulder and into the scrub as the asshole blasted by dead center on the asphalt. I encountered just one of those, and it happened just like my friends told me.
I think I’ve figured out what Kim’s secret trip is about now….someone issued hunting permits. >:-]

If the African-Americans in this country are so competent (I’ve heard it said by many of them that they invented everything), let them go back to Africa and show the people there how to build a run a functioning society.
