There are all sorts of social couplings [sic] that anyone with a brain could see would lead to trouble. (Note the “with a brain” stipulation; this will be important later.) Allow me to list but a few.
- Men (even men who think they’re women) allowed access to a woman’s changing room: trouble.
- Homosexual Boy Scout leaders being allowed to run Scout troops full of young boys: trouble.
- Female sailors forced to share quarters with male sailors on board a Navy vessel: trouble.
- Male prison warders being employed in women’s prisons: trouble.
- Female prison warders being employed in men’s prisons. trouble.
My point is that common sense would dictate that all the above should be recognized as being potentially troublesome, because everyday experience (not to mention history) can provide endless examples thereof. (Here’s one example of the last in the above list.)
And yet all the above silliness is not only allowed, but encouraged — and then when the S Hits The F, everyone is surprised? (Well, I’m not surprised, and nor is anyone with some vestige of common sense.)
Frankly, I’m done with all of it. Let the social experimenters continue with their endless, foolish experiments, I don’t care a fig.
If girls get raped by men in their high school- or college toilets and locker rooms, I don’t care.
If boys come back from their Scout camps with a shiny new Fellatio Badge: hang the offending Scout leaders and fine / flog / imprison the parents for their negligence; I don’t care.
If every female sailor gets pregnant and has to go on some kind of lifetime G.I. benefits, and ships sink because of a shortage of sailors; so be it.
If the incidence of rape by male warders skyrockets in women’s prisons; whatever.
If female warders get pregnant by their convict boyfriends or help said boyfriends get access to drugs, booze or guns; tell someone who cares.
I’m not interested in getting excited about foolishness and its many consequences.
Because if I do get excited about all the above, then I’m the intolerant one, the male chauvinist, the right-winger, the whatever.
I don’t care about that, either. FOAD, the lot of you.
As a transgender person I can give SOME input here about how definitions are failing:
I am LEGALLY a woman, MEDICALLY I’m somewhere in between male and female, PHYSICALLY (as in the genitals and part of the other plumbing) I’m a man (for now, surgery can replace those male genitals with a vagina, but no uterus or ovaries).
So what am I, and according to whom? And don’t go ideological on me here.
Were I to undergo those surgeries, my plumbing would be the same as someone born a woman who had her uterus and ovaries surgically removed (which happens for medical reasons sometimes).
What am I then?
In an all male facility I’d be treated as a woman invading there, in an all female facility by some as a man invading there.
Effectively the purely binary system of gender definitions is flawed, medically there are a few percent of human beings who fall outside that binary definition and I’m one of them. And the same happens in other species as well, the first evidence of that I saw was a female chicken we owned when I was a child that turned into a rooster (at least outwardly) and started to behave like one. I’ve also seen the same in birds and fish.
Now, what to do as a society (and it should have been done long ago, transgender people have been known to exist as far back as ancient Egypt at least)?
Building entirely separate everything for transgender people (and in duplicate, transmale and transfeminine individuals both exist) is not economically feasible, there just aren’t enough of us to warrant that in most situations.
In some situations doing away with gender distinction completely works. Toilets are a prime example. I’ve seen gender neutral toilets in many places, and nobody cares, nobody tries to sneak looks at the other sex doing their thing (despite what some people think, people who mainly fall into the very small category who want to do such things themselves but are too embarrassed to admit it).
For prisons it becomes tricky. Unless like in for example Dutch prisons there is no “general population” where inmates can mingle freely, men and women need to be protected from each other. And transgender individuals need to be protected from both. Heck, men need to be protected from other men and women from other women, homosexual rape is rampant in prisons after all and nobody seems to care.
The number of transgender criminals is minuscule, reflecting our very limited numbers in general. Being transgender doesn’t make you more likely to commit crimes, it’s just made to seem like that by the excessive media coverage if it does happen.
So even special housing units for transgender prisoners aren’t really feasible, especially with a prison system that’s already massively overcrowded.
So what to do. I would propose something that makes sense to me as a transgender person who’s not a political or otherwise ideological radical for any group:
Those transgender individuals who have not gone through medical transition (and are thus not visually the other gender) go into prisons reflecting their birth gender.
Those who have, go into prisons reflecting their legal gender.
Those who, like me, fall somewhere in between a panel of judges and psychologists get to decide on a case by case basis.
For example, were someone like me to be convicted of raping a woman, they go into a male prison. Risk of recidivism behind bars is very real.
Someone like me convicted of say tax fraud goes into a female prison. Very little risk of SA on other prisoners by her because one of the things that hormone therapy does is to reduce (to the point of non-existence) the sex drive, and even the ability to have an erection. Which of course does mean that the hormone treatment has to continue during incarceration.
And for transmale prisoners it’s obviously the other way around.

We have had a long (well over two decades) and cordial relationship pretty much, as I recall, since the early beginnings of my several websites. Where we have tended to differ is in our respective outlooks: mine as a very conservative American, and yours as a moderate European — and I have always welcomed your thoughtful opinions, even when I disagreed with them. Those differences were in degree, or sometimes in tone, but as I said, always cordial.
I did not know this about you — how could I? — and I’m going to say right now that your gender confusion (if I may call it that) does not matter a damn to me. Of course you are correct: sometimes Mother Nature (who can be an ice-cold bitch) causes problems in definition — in this case, in terms of gender.
That it happens only to a tiny proportion of the global population, as you correctly point out, doesn’t make it any easier for society to deal with.
And society is forced to make all laws and regulations because of the transgressions of a few, whether male, female or those unfortunates like yourself who fall in between. Sometimes that may seem harsh — we’ve argued about the death penalty for the worst of them many times in the past — but if you look at the alternatives, there is very little choice for lawmakers precisely because of the rarity of the occurrence. The law, unfortunately, is a very blunt object, a sledgehammer if you will, where in many cases what’s required is a needle or scalpel.
This is why, in both Europe and the United States, there are so many laws: the blacks and whites of most issues are fairly simple to address, but the many shades in between that need to be addressed take up a huge amount of time and, as in this case, a tremendous amount of soul-searching and sometimes suffering and anguish.
Rest assured, however, that as much as it may seem otherwise, I have a simple outlook on matters like this: I believe that a murderer should get executed, whether male, female, transsexual or any of those various shades inflicted on us by nature. Those, to me, are simple matters.
When it comes to the smaller issues, however, is where I and many — perhaps most — people struggle.
What to do about gender assignation in public toilets, for example, is one of those issues. As you correctly point out, hormone therapy reduces the sex drive, and if this were the general case, I would have no issue with, say, genderless bathrooms. (Shower facilities, on the other hand…)
So the problem, if I may say so, is not with transsexuals like you in whatever bathroom you may find yourself. The problem is that some scumbags will use this tolerance as a means for sexual aggression and dominance. And sadly, there are probably more scumbags like that than there are actual transsexuals — and so, in comes the sledgehammer.
As with so much of your writings, you have a profoundly sensible outlook on at least some of the problems associated with this situation. Certainly, a case-by-case determination by people qualified to assess the situation is not only sound, but easily implemented. That our lawmakers and bureaucrats cannot do something so simple is of course not unexpected.
Now for a personal note. A close member of my extended family is going through gender re-assignation as we speak, so I am not unfamiliar with your situation.

Thanks, I gave it a lot of thought for well over a decade before I decided that yes, I’m transgender and started transition.
Luckily people overall are pretty accepting here, and health insurance covers a lot of the related medical cost (psychological evaluations and support, hormone treatment, surgeries) and the rest is relatively affordable.
Yes, the majority of transgender people, like the majority of every general group in the population, are law abiding and sensible individuals.
And the minority mess it up for the rest of us.
I’m also firmly convinced that the majority of the “trans criminals” mentioned in the media aren’t transgender at all, nor the majority of the “trans athletes” “forcing their way into women’s sports”. Like autism and anxiety it’s being used as an excuse by people who hope it lets them get away with transgressions.
Most actual transgender people are physically weakened by the process. Estrogen treatment reduces muscle mass, so physical strength. but it doesn’t reduce your body dimensions, so you’re carrying roughly the same body weight around on weaker legs… Doesn’t really work for competitive sports, does it. There’s a reason why eastern block nations used to dose their female athletes with high doses of testosterone prior to the Olympics.

Personally I had my first suicide attempt because of that when I was 10 years old. That’s almost 40 years before I came out as transgender to friends and family.
I knew I was “different from the other boys” (and clearly so did they) but how? That was not possible to specify as in a deeply religiously conservative community the very concept of “transgender” or “gay” wasn’t just taboo, it didn’t exist.

I’ve taken to picking certain days during the week to NOT read any of the news, stop the scrolling, and generally just avoid anything likely to agitate me. Cause I still get mad. Just before I retired it was worse than that. We experienced the joy of Diversity Fairs where embracing the bullshit wasn’t enough; we were required to Celebrate Diversity, sometimes even required to talk to the group about how diversity made our world/life/job better.

My situation is thus:- I am a woman. I was born a woman and I will die a woman. I have female DNA.
Less than, I believe, 0.03% of live births are what used to be given the old fashioned term, ‘intersex’ I.e. those whose external genitalia are indeterminate and/or have ambiguous DNA. Fair enough, that person has every right to choose whichever gender they feel most comfortable in, and to make any physical changes they require, in order to do so. Good for them, go live your best life – that’s what everyone deserves isn’t it?
I’ve worked in at least two establishments with ‘a dude in a dress’. Six foot, broad shoulders, muscular legs. Fake top half and junk swinging around in a mini skirt. In an educational establishment. We were told to call them by their female name when they dressed as a female, and their male name when they dressed as a man. I could not feel less repulsed if I tried. Worse than that, they had access to what should be single gender spaces – toilets, changing rooms, sick rooms – and I was supposed to feel ok about this? Nah.
It’s not on me to accept your delusion that you are a woman – you are not and never can be (see above re female DNA). You do not have the right to enter my spaces, compete in my sports, teach in my education establishments, to treat me or my relatives in ill health, or do anything else whilst masquerading – and that is what you are doing – as a woman.

Now for someone with Klinefelter syndrome (XXY) how they present is based on which is dominant…the X or Y. No matter how they present they may not fully *feel* like that gender…but their dominant gene is still what determines it.
Find a way to change that gene dominance in someone with Klinefelter’s syndrome, or a way to add/remove an X or a Y in anyone else…THE and only then will they have actually changed gender.
In the meantime?
If you’re male to female trans and ACTUALLY LOOK female, act female, ect I will treat you in all manners of courtesy and protocol as female. But if you go the “Drag Queen Library Hour” route, or have a Five O’clock shadow? Sod off.

If they can make you mouth the politically correct “facts,” despite you knowing they are not truly facts, they have control. Gender is determined by biology, and it is and will always be so. I feel for jwenting, I truly do, but that is a psychological problem, not a physical one. No amount of surgery or hormones, or treatment, will ever make a woman into a man, or vice versa.
