Undersea Solution

I see that this has happened yet again in the Bay of Biscay:

Orcas have sunk a yacht off Spain‘s north-west coast after ramming another three in the same area.  Two people on board the pleasure craft called Idem had to be rescued after their rudder was destroyed and their boat began to sink.

This is not the first time I’ve commented on this phenomenon, but I think the time has come for us to explore the topic more thoroughly.

It seems to me that these orcas are getting a little too big for their boots, so to speak, attacking humans at will and endangering lives.  So it’s time we reminded these assholes just who is at the top of the predator scale, with a little massive retaliation.

I know, I know:  there aren’t many problems that can’t be solved with a sufficient quantity of high explosives.

Of course, that would end the problem right there.  But there are admittedly a few problems when it comes to arming pleasure craft with high-explosive devices of this type.

First and foremost, of course, is that for some reason Teh Orthoriteez — especially of the Euro type — seem to look askance at private citizens exercising their right to self defense.  If there’s any depth-charging to be done, they would say, then we’re the ones who are going to do it.  Except they won’t, as we all know, because the Usual Suspects in the Pore Likkul Animules Support Group might get upset.

Second comes the problem of supply.  Because of said Gummint reluctance, depth charges are not just things you can buy off the rack at your friendly Merchant Of Death’s establishment — not even in Florida or Texas, let alone in Spain.

Third is that the delivery device of said things can spoil the looks of one’s pleasure craft / yacht:

Finally [sic], while depth charges are unquestionably a worthy solution to the orca problem, one has to admit that it’s something of an overkill solution, like using C4 to rid yourself of that fire-ant nest in your backyard.  In both cases there is likely a chance of some collateral damage — in the Bay of Biscay, for example, a whole bunch of otherwise-edible fishies are going to get pulverized, as would your neighbor’s foundations in the fire-ant scenario.

There is at least one solution.

…or, seeing that it’s Spain we’re talking about, I’m sure there are a few of these still lying around:

Now granted, it may be difficult to lay one’s hands on either of the above, but it would be easier than getting both depth charges and their delivery device.  And let’s be honest, they don’t take up a lot of storage room.

No, I think that a box of these would be a perfect solution to the problem, especially as they require only a Mark I launch mechanism:

  or

And should some nautical federales show up, wanting to search the boat for any reason, the said devices are easily disposed of just by dropping them over the other side of the boat.  (It may not be advisable to get rid of them by tossing them at the fuzz, though.)

Anyway, those are my thoughts.  Any comments?

  1. Hmm. Killer whales are everywhere; what are the Spanish doing to irritate their lot? Are they waving capes underwater?
    .

  2. Can’t we put some loudmouthed celebrities on some yachts and see how this plays out? Let’s not rush to condemn the Orcas right away. Let’s harness their power for something good

      1. Exactly my thought, too. How can we get Sea Shepherd, PETA, and any of the more radical animal protection groups to buy sailboats (to minimize the environmental impact of their presence, of course) and patrol the bay, particularly near the Spanish coast to ensure that whatever nasty old Capitalism is doing that aggravates the Orca isn’t happening any more.

Of course, the Orca may take care of what PETA, Sea Shepherd, and any other radical animal protection groups are doing that aggravates nasty old Capitalism. That would be considered an all around plus.

    1. Greta Thunberg?” Maybe we could persuade her to scold the Orcas.
      “How Dare you?

  3. I’m thinking along the same lines. To my knowledge nowhere else has had any aggressive behavior by orcas towards humans in the wild. Given the area, I wonder if there have been some past incidents of harassment or attacks on the orcas by some assholes with more money than decency. Russian oligarch, tik-tocker, ect.

  4. The solution is chambered in 30-06, or some similar caliber. Apply until message received and hostilities cease.

That said, one does wonder what changed to begin this course of action. It’s likely just one local pod, not a species-wide change in behavior.

  5. Let’s not be too hasty. Orcas are intelligent and very trainable. Can we train them to single out refugee boats fro attack? Instead of declaring war, turn them into an ally in the fight against illegal immigration. Yes, I realize that could backfire if they develop a taste for human flesh but, well, even that could be helpful for disposing of murderers, kiddie diddlers, and communists.

    1. I was thinking along the same lines. For instance, could we entice a pod or two of them to start hanging out in the English Channel?

  6. That pod is probably the orca version of “teens” who invade our malls. Were they mostly black?

  7. This started a more than decade ago with one orca in a single pod that was damaging rudders. That individual has gone on to train others in the pod to do the same, only getting more destructive with time. There may be some evidence that the behavior is spreading to other pods. The only solution is the culling of this problem pod before people die. Of course the euroweenies are horrified at the only solution, and have instead opted to issue orca warnings with positions of orca pods to sailors crossing the bay.

  8. Orca’s will thump the side of a boat. Dad kept a stainless Mini-14 in the 24′ cutty cabin he when I was a teen. I had only experienced it once but dad told me of a time it started happening and the Orca got 3 rounds of 5.56.

If I am out on the big water and I see an Orca it’s time to go at a good speed.

  9. I’m thinking flash-bangs might be better than regular frags. The shrapnel isn’t going to travel very far in the water anyway, and the sound & pressure of the explosion would probably send exactly the message desired.
