Reaction

Mostly, I find the “reaction” videos on Eeewwchoob to be exercises in frustration, because most of the reactors don’t have a clue about music, or what the songs represent and so on.

But this one is absolutely priceless.

It’s just a pair of musical morons listening to one of the greatest songs ever written — but their reaction is pretty much the same as mine when I first heard it.

I dunno what that means or what it says about me… but hey, you get to listen to Gerry Rafferty, so how bad can it be?

  1. Wow! Now THAT’S my ear worm for today. Great memory, haven’t heard it in years. Came out last year in college.

I get that reaction from my kids sometimes, although less now that they’re older, they’ve heard a great deal of my Olde Pharte music, as you call it.

When he was about 12 and had a fleeting interest in guitar, my son wandered into my office while I was playing some Mountain.

“Wow! Who is that, dad?” he asked. “Leslie West!” I replied. Went right to Roll over Beethoven for him. I quit working and we spent about an hour flipping from stuff my Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh, Mark Knopfler … you get the picture.

He was gobsmacked. So much fun to watch his young face as he discovered these gems. Both my kids have a fairly good appreciation of 1970s music. For me, being my late grammar school, high school, and college years, that was THE decade for me, musically, although there was still some good stuff coming out in the 1980s. But the ‘70s? The best.

  2. I don’t usually comment on musical subjects because I’m one of those “musical morons” you referenced. Reaction videos are the most insipid type of YT content. Why? Because the YTer always seems to claim “I’ve never heard of – insert name of famous musician or band here – before,” when you know darn well they have. Especially if they claim some kind of connection with the music industry. I’ll give a break to the vids of foreigners reacting to old American television shows, but considering the side bar shows twenty other YTers reacting to the same exact person, place, or thing, my eyes just glaze over as I look for something else to watch.

  3. About ten years ago, I was in Vegas, hanging out listening to a band at the Blue Lounge in Bally’s casino. They were a decent bar band, playing standard 70s fare – Van Morrison and the like. But they did have a sax. They were taking requests, and someone requested “Baker Street.” They hesitated, then conference among themselves for a minute or two. They obviously knew about the song and might have even played it a time or two, but it was definitely not in their repertoire. But they took the guy’s tip and played a pretty damned acceptable version. That made the trip for me.

  4. I like to watch the “clueless” ones becuz their ignorance is often hilarious, and the phrases they come up with to try to describe what they’re hearing can be comedy gold. Of course some are so ignrant that they become boring, but then I just stop watching them.

I also like to watch the “experts” to get insights as to what had to happen behind the scenes to make such wonderful music too. Of course they can sometimes get into so much minutiae that it gets boring also, but as with the ignorant ones I can just stop watching them too.

Mostly, I just like to watch them to vicariously experience seeing/hearing something for the 1st time again.

  5. Sorry, YouTube and I don’t get along; plus, I’m stuck in a Basie, Goodman, Miller, Kenton sort of rut with occasional detours to the Lighthouse.

  6. I watch a few of the “kids” listening to the music we grew up with. We were so lucky. Rappers loving Zeppelin, Floyd, and Steely Dan is a wonder to behold. It may come to pass that the rock of the 60’s to 2000 will be remembered 100’s of years from now as Bach and Beethoven are now.
