Reader Question

Reader Brian H. sends me this pic and asks:  “Seriously, which one is you?”

Seriously, neither could possibly be me:

  • I don’t smoke
  • I’m not Rhodesian
  • I wasn’t drafted till 1977
  • They’re holding guns, not a guitar, and finally:
  • I’d never wear those little shortie-pants in the African sun;  my lily-white skin would burn to a crisp in about half an hour.

But I’m flattered that you think I would have been in the Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI).  Those guys were maniacs.

  1. 1977. Was a pretty good year overall from my view point. Or at least looking back on it seems that way. Probably was hell to get through.

  2. Lilly white skin??? Dinna know ye had Irish in ya!
But as noted, most Yanks are geographically challenged.
    Carry on!

    1. Africa’s Commandos: The Rhodesian Light Infantry from Border Control to Airborne Strike Force Hardcover – July 19, 2013
Gives the unit history year by year along with short stories by the troopers who served in the actions at that time.
Best unit history I ever read and gave my copy to a vet who was writing a book on FN FAL’s

  3. You’d think they would have a deeper tan. I’m lucky in that I’ll turn dark enough to pass for Mexicano when in the sun. My brother burns bright red instead.
