Dolly Parton was talented, hard working and she succeeded. She used her earned wealth to help many others by providing good jobs and starting several charities. The world was a better place when she was in it. We need more people in this world like Dolly Parton.
The world is a little dimmer today after her passing.
Vale Dolly.
Many moons ago when I was living in the Pacific Northwest, there was a one digit difference between my phone number and Ticketmaster’s, and I was constantly intercepting their calls. One day I answered to a woman who had lost her mind.
“ABOUT TIME YOU COSCKSUCKERS ANSWERED THE PHONE I WANNA SEE DOLLY PARTON AND KENNY ROGERS IN THE TACOMA DOME AND DON’T YOU FUCKING TELL ME YOU DON’T HAVE TICKETS BECAUSE I’VE BEEN CALLING AND CALLING AND YOU MOTHERFUCKERS DON’T ANSWER AND I WANT GOOD SEATS AND YOU’D BETTER HAVE ‘EM CAUSE IT’S NOT MY FAULT YOU DON’T ANSWER THE FUCKING PHONE!!!….”
When she finally came up for air I said, “Ma’am I’m so terribly sorry, you obviously haven’t heard.”
“Heard what, motherfucker?”
“I hate to be the one to tell you, but Ms. Parton passed away this morning, and the show’s been cancelled, obviously.”
Looong pause. “Wait. What? Are you fucking serious?”
“I’m afraid so, ma’am. Her limo was tboned by a milk truck and she didn’t survive.”
Another pause, punctuated by sniffling. “Oh my god, that’s awful!”
“Yes it is, ma’am. Kenny Rogers is so upset he says he may never perform again.”
“OH MY GOD!”
She hung up to tend to her sorrows.
It was a good day.
RIP DP.
Not That You Needed Another Reason to Love Dolly Parton, But . . .
From a 1978 Playboy interview:
“… All of a sudden, these men started approachin’ us on the street. They thought we were up for sale. You can imagine how ridiculous I looked. I would look like a streetwalker if you didn’t know this was an image. I would look like a total whore, I suppose. I’m sure we looked just like what they thought we were. But I had a gun. I never traveled without a gun, still don’t. I always carry a gun.
Playboy: What kind?
Parton: A .38 pistol. I have a permit for it in Nashville. I just carry it for protection. I feel safer when I’ve got it. I just don’t like the idea of knowin’ I’m totally helpless. I’m always scared in a big city and New York was totally foreign to us…”
She was big into encouraging literacy.
