The reelection of President Donald Trump came with an overall shift in the political landscape regarding climate and energy issues. Since then, major media outlets shut down their climate desks, corporations are easing back on emission-reduction targets, and polls consistently show the public rates climate change low on their list of priorities.
Can we also repeal all those stupid CAFE standards and regulations on auto companies and the cars they sell?
And the moment Newsom or AOC is crowned in ’28 they’ll reverse all those changes by executive order.
Can they also repeal all those stupid cow fart regulations?
The foolishness is ENDING, or just going underground?
I don’t think we should completely abolish emissions and efficiency standards as one of the big side effects of these standards was to force The Big Three to give a shit about the quality of their engines…at least a little.
And frankly–much more on the emissions side–with the number of people on the roads today (and the distances) what was coming out of the tail pipes in the late 70s and early 80s would be *horrible*. I was my teens in the early 80s, and riding a bicycle around even a small town you could *taste* the emissions.
But I certainly think that when manufacturers remove the f*king spare tire to save weight to get that extra 1/10 of a MPG that we have gone too far.
And the run flat tires that go with that spare deletion are heavier, stiffer and batter the suspension, more expensive, and wear out faster than standard tires. So we lose mpg, wear the suspension, scatter more rubber dust on the roads, and put more tires in the disposal queue. Get a little and lose a lot, but the Carbon Gods are appeased.
