Drive Time, Old Fartism

I have no idea how I stumbled onto Bangers & Cash, but I love it (for very obvious reasons).  An old-fashioned, gentle TV show about old-fashioned, gentle people talking about old-fashioned, gentle cars.

They talk about them, they restore them, they fix them, and they drive them.  It gives me a chance to go back in time, revel in nostalgia… and the only thing missing is a pint or two of Wadworths 6X at my right hand.

It’s all so different from today’s normal frenzied, clickbait-driven fare, which is why I enjoy it so.  Join me, if you will.  (link in logo below)

  1. It’s sad that the UK market for Classic cars is collapsing as the nostalgia-ridden Olde Phartes die off. At several auctions this year the great majority of cars have failed to reach even their reserve price. In an rescue attempt the auctioneers present the lots as bargain buys.   3. This is just another rehash of shows like the original ” Wheeler Dealers” with Mike Brewer and Ed China. Buy some Marginally interesting 15 to 20 year old car for X Dollars. Spend $5,000 in Parts and 200 hours of Ed’s mechanic Time at $ 100 an hour, Sell the result for $ X + $ 7,000 and declare a win with a profit, when it was really an $ 18,000 loss.

    The only people who make money restoring cars are the shops doing the restorations, and many of them don’t make a lot of money at it either.

    But yes I’ll watch a few episodes until I get bored with the uninspiring car choices.

    1. I think you’ve missed the point, here. It’s not the cars — most of which are just “bangers” — but the eccentric people who do this and the spirit in which they indulge themselves. In my case, it’s also views of the villages and countryside, as well as the gentle voiceover, which makes it so appealing.

      1. Well that would explain why I don’t find it appealing. I’ll watch a show about the English countryside, but the appeal of shows on youtube is that they focus on one subject that maybe has limited appeal but they do that one thing well.

        Just how many people might you expect are willing to watch a multipart year long weekly series ( 45 minute plus episodes ) that goes into minute detail on building a working 50 foot Lobster Boat.     2. For example the Greasy Fingers YouTube channel. He estimates 800 hours to restore a 1986 G Porsche to should last another thirty years as a daily driver near-perfect condition. Plus quite a lot in replacement parts and consumables. Sale value $80k – $100k. It’s a labor of love, nothing else. At least he didn’t spend that time on a 1958 Ford Edsel that might conceivably go for as much as $30k.
