Here’s an interesting one. Born in Austria, Rose Stradner eventually found her way over to Hollywood, starred in a couple decent movies — she was an excellent actress — and ended up marrying director Joe Mankiewicz.
That’s the bare bones of it. In fact, she was schizophrenic, a condition which went ballistic if she had a few cocktails — and she loved to drink. In fact, the memorable expression “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!” was supposedly coined during a dinner party when Rose started to go off the edge, then later used in All About Eve.
It all ended when she popped a jugful of sleeping tablets, at age 45.
In my old age it’s all academic now. But in my youth I was never attracted to women who drank heavily. My wife of 55 years rarely drank and still rarely drinks a glass of wine.
