I know, I know, apples and pears; me and AOC; .22 LR and .500 S&W, etc.
But still:

I’m sure that someone is going to buy that RIA M60 copy… I just can’t see why.

I surely would like to get my hands on an M60 again (been almost 50 years) but even if they knocked a zero off that price ($3000.00) I still wouldn’t buy it. It just ain’t worth it, except for a financial vehicle for storing extra cash.
It doesn’t do select fire, automatic only, and has limited use. It is gawdawful heavy and requires 2 other people for support.
Yeah, two support people to carry the money for the ammo.
Probably the M60 is intended as a sear host.
Speaking for myself, I won’t be purchasing either. Nothing against the 742, it’s a fine rifle by the Original Remington company. I’ll stick with my M1A, thank you very much.
I qualified with the M60 in basic training. Later in West Germany, I also qualified with the MG3, earning a Schützenschnur in Bronze.

I would equate shooting the Rock Island semi-auto to getting kissed through a screen door.
If I were shooting the Rock Island, I would be peeved if I didn’t get love letters from the ammunition manufacturers.
The one Class III event I went to I got to try a Thompson, M3 Grease gun and a BAR. The grease gun was the most fun. The Thompson was heavy.
It’s not the cost of the firearm that is prohibitive, it’s the cost of additional barrels, springs and ammunition you need to enjoy the firearm that adds up.
If I had the sort of money one gets from a significant lotto winnings (not just “retire now” but in the `annual interest returns themselves are “retire now” money` range I’d buy the M60. You really only need one other person to help you haul the ammo and keep linking. I doubt the semi-auto version will shoot fast enough long enough to over-heat the barrel, and there really isn’t anything better for the upcoming zombie apocalypse.
