At Long Last

Yesterday was our first actual day of fall here in north Texas, oh yes it was.  Temperatures in the low 60s, night time in the low 40s, and brisk, cold winds from the northwest… hell, I almost had to wear a light coat to the range, fer gosh sakes.  (A gilet was all that was necessary.)  From the forecast, it seems as though there’s no chance of any high temperatures popping up from now on, either.  Yippee.

And all you guys in the northern states can quit your sniggering now.  If ever I leave Texas — highly unlikely, absent a lottery win, and maybe not even then — it would be to escape the sweltering Texas summers, which are no damn joke (as much as we make jokes about them).

So the end of summer and the long-awaited fall — my favorite season, regardless of which state I’ve lived in — comes as a welcome relief.

In celebration of fall, my laptop’s wallpaper is this:

…although how I really feel is this:

Wouldn’t mind a little drizzle now and again, either.

  1. Ratified. It’s raining now in the Ohio valley and we’re predicted for a constant drizzle for the foreseeable future. That’s pretty much a given with a hurricane down south — we always get rain when that happens.

  2. IN the event of a big lottery win, summer house in New Hampshire, winter House maybe in the Carolinas, maybe Kentucky or Eastern Tennessee. Never visited Texas though. Barbecue and rodeo have me interested

  3. As I age I am enjoying winters less & less (not that I was ever an enthusiastic “winter” person). But I find the lack of daylight in the northern climes during the winter months the worst part about it.

However I can live with a little winter if it thins out the bugs & other vermin.

    1. You’re absolutely right about the lack of daylight — although here in Cuidad Tejas that’s not really an issue, at least not as long as it is in northerly climes.

Even my last trip to London was marred by three weeks of gloom, fog and drizzle, and for the first time ever, I was glad to leave the place.

      1. Eons ago when I worked at the HP campus. I’d drive in, in the dark, and leave in the dark (sun starts setting around 6 ish). I worked in a windowless office building. For nearly 4 months out of the year, I never saw the sun except on the weekends.

Needless to say I had a sour attitude a lot more than usual.

  4. Like your wallpaper photo. Might you have a link to the source?

Activity/consumption at our bird feeder much increased. Little rascals must know something. Also good to discover that Winco sells the seed mix for the native birds in their bulk section–78 cents/lb. Had a bit of an issue last season with tree rats raiding the feeder. Snappy salute to wife, “Yes, ma’am!”. Trusty .177 air rifle solved that. Peace and domestic tranquillity through superior fire power.
