Rock, Meet Hard Place Ep. 34

Great Caesar’s bleeding eyeballs, how stupid can you get?

Most Democrats think that crime is a “major problem” in large cities, but they oppose sending National Guard troops to respond to the problem, according to a new AP-NORC poll.

Let me try to understand this.

Let’s leave aside the (quite-logical) assumption that Democrat government in our cities don’t really give a rat’s ass about the crime problem in their respective jurisdictions, and grant the point that they are trying to do something about the problem.

And failing.

I probably shouldn’t do this, but I’m also going to ignore the fact that the 2020 mostly-peaceful BLM demonstrations/riots led to appalling destruction of said cities, and Democrat city governments didn’t only try to quell the unrest, but basically encouraged it either by actual statements, or by inaction.

While that kind of lawlessness seems to have abated, what’s happened since is an appalling rise in violent crime:  muggings, murders, burglaries and so on have all rocketed skywards, and continue to do so.

However you frame the issue, one thing is crystal clear:  Democrat politicians can’t address the crime problem in the large cities.

What options, then, remain to anyone who actually does want to find a solution?

Well, during the aforesaid BLM riots, Trump 45 didn’t send in the National Guard, leaving it up to the local governments to deal with it.  And they didn’t.

Trump 47 recently sent in the Guard to clear up the crime problem in Washington D.C., and the city has, in the space of a couple weeks or so, become a safe place to live.  (Note that the only “opposition” to Trump’s intervention in D.C. has come from people — White Old Farts — who either don’t live there or else aren’t affected by the crime personally.  The actual — mostly Black — residents of D.C. are overjoyed that their city has become a safer place to live, and are not part of the demonstrations.)

So why, I ask, would Democrats oppose the same treatment for the rest of the crime-ridden cities?

Because it’s Trump doing the sending.  And Orange Man Bad.

Feckless fools, they are — both the Democrat politicians and their supporters.

  1. I don’t think that it a question of Democrats wanting to curb crime, i don’t think they want to do it. They allowed violent protestors such as BLM and Ant Teefa run rampant while the Democrats demanded that police departments be defunded. Combined with Democrats at the state level appointing atrocious soft on crime judges or Democrat prosecutors who under charge criminals, and you have the start of a lawless society.

Democrats have the Obama touch; everything they touch turns to shit. It’s the opposite of the Midas touch.

  2. While I certainly would never side with the commies/dems, I do believe that there are some legal and constitutional issues with sending in the National Guard outside of a declared emergency. And just declaring an “emergency” to enjoy that loophole is also an area ripe for abuse (by both sides). And also, soldiers tend to make crappy cops. I’m not even sure they issue ammo for those types of duties anymore (not since Kent State, anyway. Damned hippies).

DC, due to it’s special status, doesn’t have the same restrictions.

Trump had his chance during the antifa/blm riots (rioting is actually the one emergency the National Guard should be called for) but he didn’t do it. Doing now for a “crime emergency” is mostly bullshit. Instead, use the high crime rate as a political cudgel and beat the snot of the dem leadership every day with it.

I believe the Army part of the DC NG are still all MP’s. It was when I was in it 1966-1970, and we had police training, not quite the same or as good as street cops who live the job day-to-day, but still useful. I was on the street for the MLK riots, various anti-war riots (peace marches – ha-ha), inaugurals, state funerals and many smaller anti-police race riots started by local domestic disturbances. We were sworn as Special Police (by the Mayor or Chief of Police, I forget which) or federalized by the President, with a temporary peel-and-stick badge, and issued CS gas and ammo before hitting the streets fully armed for disturbances. We had arrest powers and did detain people, radioed the real cops, who came to us and took away the detainees in paddy wagons.
Even though the TV and liberal papers gibbered “the troops are using restraint and do not have live ammunition,” people tended to settle down a bit when six to 180 guys showed up with rifles and shotguns. Uncertainty is powerful medicine for cowards.

  3. Given DC’s special legal situation, Trump had legal grounds to send in the National Guard. These other blue shit holes? Not so much. I prefer to let the people who voted for this to stew in their mess. The governors could send in their states’ National Guard.

  4. I moved back inside the Wire (I-495 beltway around DC) back in 2015. I have been to DC exactly ONCE since then, to attend an ELO concert (excellent by the way) in that time. There’s not much that could persuade me to return, drop in crime notwithstanding, because I cannot legally carry in DC.

The local newsmuppets are reporting a dramatic downturn in restaurant and club business in DC, framing it as a problem CAUSED by too much police presence. The real problem is that the illegal immigrants employed by these restaurants and clubs have either unassed the AOR, or have gone to ground until business returns to normal. Meanwhile, the erstwhile residents of DC who don’t live in Dupont Circle or the like, are quite happy that the drive-bys, car-jackings, murders, thefts, and property crime are down double-digit numbers. Even the Mayor has said this is a welcome relief from lawlessness that decades of Democratic fecklessness have wrought (I may have added that last part).

    1. “…I cannot legally carry in DC.”
Pointing out the need to have NATIONWIDE CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY – OPEN OR CONCEALED!

  5. Please, good sir, STOP asking how stupid can some people get. They’re taking it as a personal challenge.

  6. The Left is committed to several ideas that force them to take this position. The first is that policing cannot reduce crime because it does not address “root causes”. The second is that most standard police techniques are racist (or whatever).

This allows them to disavow responsibility for any crime problems and plow money into their pet projects instead of law enforcement.

This may seem stupid, but it is not as long as the urban underclass is committed to voting only for Democrats. These policy preferences gradually force out the middle class and that makes the Democrats in those jurisdictions more secure electoral. It is win/win for them amd frankly they don’t give a rat’s ass about the people who are the crime victims.

  7. I don’t recall anyone having a problem when LBJ (D-TX) sent in the Natl Guard to Detroit in ’67
