News Update Update

That’s not a typo.

Over time, I’ve found that the weekly News Update has started to consume more time than I think it’s absolutely worth.  (If you disagree, and can’t see your life continuing with any meaningful existence without it, feel free to let me know.)

Basically, the Updates are a way for me to poke fun at what passes for “news” these days, especially so when I edit a headline to point out, for example, that the appalling Kim Kardashian has once again flashed her massive tits/ass to gain yet more attention for her clothing line.

But if I add up the total effort required to produce such an item — finding an article worth including, saving the headline (sometimes as a pic), saving the link thereto, making a pithy (thorry) comment, and multiplying that by 15 or so — it comes out to well over a couple days’ work (albeit spread out over a week).

I don’t mind spending that amount of time — or more — on writing a decent post on a topic which has captured my attention.  But to do all that work for a post which is eminently skimmable… I think you get my point.

So unless I hear differently from y’all (via email or comments, for those lucky enough to still be able to do the latter, don’t get me started), I think that the News Updates are going to become a thing of the past.

The only part I might consider keeping is the link-free , because that’s usually genuinely funny on occasion.

What you might see in its place is a series of stand-alone posts like this one:

Snow closes British schools and roads on first day back after Christmas as temperature plunges to -9.3C in south and warnings for ice and blizzards cover UK

Total time needed to create:  about 45 seconds, including the pic creation.  And there’s no link, because who the hell cares about the details?

Let me know what you think.  (And yes I know, it’s free ice cream to do with what I want;  but the reason for this website is twofold:  a rant vehicle for Kim, and entertainment for my long-suffering Readers.  Both are important.)

  1. To be honest, I skim the post and occasionally chuckle, so having single posts as you see fit would be perfectly fine.
I’ll take any and all free Kim ice cream. 😁

  2. I enjoy it, but you are right, Kim, probably not worth the time/effort you put into it relative to other stuff you put up.

I say, do whatever keeps you energized and engaged in this little endeavor because it is an important part of my every morning. I want you to continue and you should do whatever floats your boat, so to speak. I want it to be fun for you and not seen as a chore so I can (selfishly) enjoy all the other stuff you do besides the news.

You can still post about a particular news item or two when it strikes your fancy, but instead of making it weekly production chore, do it as the spirit moves you. The most important thing here is that you continue to be motivated to keep this place going.

  3. I like your news round up. I’ll click links if I don’t think my jaw has dropped far enough to the floor. I enjoy your commentary.

The less I recognize names in the Insignifica portion, the happier I am to be out of touch with the cesspit that today’s pop culture has become

The topics you write about that I enjoy best are shooting related, travel, art, literature, music and even the car posts. I’m not into cars but your writing about cars gives me a glimpse into an area that I wouldn’t explore on my own. I like to broaden my horizons.

The important thing is to do what you like with your blog. Take a break from the News section if you’d like.

    1. Humans can turn anything into work. Cf the people mentioned in your “insignifica” section, and the “talent” in porno movies.

If you can keep your observations and snark at pleasurable levels, and avoid making it into work, then by all means continue. Otherwise, cut back until it is enjoyable for you.

I do not wish to go to the well too often.

  4. Honestly, the “Insignifica” bit is the part I could easily do without. I find “News Update” interesting because you often pull from sources I don’t normally see but, as has been said before, it’s your site so do what gives you satisfaction.

I forget where I first saw the thing about blog viewers complaining about the free ice cream but it really resonated with me and I keep it in mind always.

  5. Ya, don’t go and stress out over doing a whole news blog post. Just the occasional one,a s you see fit would be fine. As others have said, it’s your blog place, so do what you want to do to keep it fun for you. You’ve got a nice entertaining place here. Like a comfortable pub. Change the beer if you find a better one, change the menu as you see fit, change the decor, we know you won’t go overboard.

  6. I enjoy it, but I can see how much work it takes.

How about rather than a weekly feature, you make it a monthly, or even occasionally feature?

  7. I enjoy the whole thing, but I wouldn’t mind seeing it broken down into multiple single-topic posts. Would make it easier to comment on the one or two headlines on which I might want to opine without either forgetting which one(s) caught my attention or getting distracted by all the other.

As others have said though: your porch, your rules. I’ll keep checking in regardless.

  8. It’s a nice feature and gives me glimpses into the British-Caliphate I don’t normally get. But if the effort doesn’t equal the reward (which I’m guessing are largely moral rewards) then drop it. I’d gladly see the space filled up with more spittle & invective if available.
