A Beacon Hill committee met on Monday to discuss a proposed excise tax on firearms and ammunition, aimed at enhancing public safety in Massachusetts.
The proposed bill, introduced by western Massachusetts Representative Mindy Domb, seeks to increase the excise tax on firearms and ammunition, with the revenue directed to a Public Health and Safety Fund. This fund would support community-based research, public health interventions, and services for gun violence survivors and victims’ families.
“Tragic gun deaths and catastrophic gun injuries cost the great state of Massachusetts an astounding 3.5 billion dollars each year, of which 85.4 million dollars is paid by taxpayers,” said a testifier, Matthew Nugent, during the hearing.
The proposed excise tax is set at 4.75% of the wholesale value of each firearm and individual round of ammunition. If implemented, Massachusetts would join states like California and Colorado in using gun tax revenue for violence prevention and support services.
Now I’m not proposing — what does the Left call it? oh yeah — direct action (a.k.a. violence) should be brought to bear against the people who are supporting this un-Constitutional and illegal theft.
All I’m saying is that Sam Adams (he — and brother cousin John both — of Sons of Liberty fame) would by now be firing up the tar barrels and plucking a few geese, and yea even preparing a few firebrands to be tossed into some houses. Because if they were prepared to go all fire, tar & feathers on people over a tax on paper, imagine how they’d feel about a tax on guns.
But this is modern-day Massachusetts, not the pre-Revolutionary state where the whole thing started over taxes.

Because I’m me, I just had to do 5 minutes of research. Massachusetts had a population of 7.136MM people in 2024. I couldn’t find a statistic on just shootings, but Pew Research stated that Mass. had a gun murder rate of 1.8 per 100k in 2023, so we’ll use that and fudge it a bit. So straight up, there were only ~128 gun murders in Mass. If we assume that the rate of shooting victims to actual dead murder victims is, what, let’s go with a 4:1 ratio, then slightly over 500 shooting victims. They spent $3.5 BILLION? That’s $7 million per victim? Does that sound even close to correct? I mean, the ones shot DRT just need a free ride to the morgue, that’s literally $10 in gas. Maybe if they let a few more of the gang bangers bleed out they could save some more money.
IDK, that amount of money just sounds wrong to me.
So the average Joe buys a deer rifle and two boxes of ammo, maybe $800. At the proposed tax rate, he’d be giving $38 to the state above and beyond the existing tax rate for this special fund. They are trying to recoup $85.4MM in taxpayer funds spent on gun violence victims, so at that rate they need roughly 2.2 million residents to go buy a deer rifle and two boxes of ammo to break even.
My head is starting to hurt here. The stupid, it burns.

In Massachusetts excise is a yearly (annual) tax on vehicles.
The tax rate in vehicles is $ 25 dollars per $ 1,000 dollars of value.
There are well known sources of vehicles values. NADA. Blue Book. Etc.
Now here is where the fuckery comes in
Gun excise is 4.7 percent. Say you have a classic line Sig (P229) valued at $ 1,000 dollars. That’s $ 47 bucks in taxes.
That is DOUBLE the excise rate that vehicles are taxed at.
Next – how will the state come up with the “wholesale value” of each gun?
We now know why the law passed in 2024 requires registration of all guns owned in 2025 (you have from October 2025 to October 2026 to register your personal protection devices)
Will the state just make up numbers and rape the wallets of gun owners? You betcha!
Now – this excise tax, is it one time at purchase or annually, yearly, like a vehicle. That is the 4.7 percent question.
