Last week I ranted about this “Global Emissions Tax” nonsense emanating from the U.N., and it is with great glee that I see that God-Emperor (not King) Trump has nipped that issue in the bud:
A global tax on shipping emissions won’t take effect after pressure from the Trump administration to abandon the climate activist-fueled proposal.
The International Maritime Organization had been set to vote on Friday on adopting a global carbon tax aimed at pushing the shipping industry to stop using fossil fuels. But that vote did not happen after President Donald Trump on Thursday called for other countries to oppose the tax, saying that the United States would not “tolerate” or “adhere” to the measure.
From what I can understand, Trump threatened the voting nations with stuff like trade embargoes and tariffs if they voted in support of the thing, whereupon they said “Yes, Massa” and did what he told them to do.
However, let’s not crack open the champagne just yet:
Instead, the International Maritime Organization, an agency of the United Nations that regulates shipping, moved Friday to postpone the vote on the tax for a year.
“Now you have one year, you will continue to work on several aspects of these amendments,” said Arsenio Dominguez, the secretary general of the International Maritime Organization. “You have one year to negotiate and talk and come to consensus.”
So next year, it’ll come up for a vote again, and again we’re going to have to rap their nose with a rolled-up newspaper.
I have a simple suggestion to end this thing, forever. Tell the United Nations that if they ever try to impose a global tax system on the world (and on us, of course), this action will automatically trigger the United States’s immediate withdrawal from the UN, and the expulsion of the UN organization in toto from the United States.
Then get Congress to pass a law to enable the action. Shouldn’t be that difficult, even with the expected opposition from federal judges.
Message to the UN: We don’t do taxes.
End of story.
And the next congress or president run by the globalist elite will immediately cancel any such policy re the UN and global taxes by executive order and sign up for it, turning it into US constitutional law automatically.
The UN knows this, they count on it, it’s how the US works and has worked for decades.
I’ve never seen a clearer example of tribute than any payment to the UN. We as a nation have already spoken on that matter…
Jwenting is right. The UN will just wait until the socialists are back in power in the US and have a do over vote.
The only reason to stay in the UN is to thwart this nonsense. We should cut our contribution significantly to the UN. Pay for our presence there and not much else.
In theory the concept of the United Nations sounds like a good idea, a place where countries can work out their differences however in practice it has just turned out to be a make work program for petty tyrants and useless bureaucrats as well as a money laundering scheme for those people.
Kim sed: “Tell the United Nations that if they ever….”
==============
You’re much too kind.
I’ll say it again, kick their asses out NOW and be done with them once and for all.
See, here’s what Trump OUGHT to do:
1. Fund the development of nuclear reactor designs, based on 4th generation reactors applied to ships–modernized versions of what are used in aircraft carriers and submarines.
2. Get congress to pass laws that (1) require such designs and vessels so equipped to be inspect by and certified by the NRC before they can enter US owned ports.
3. Once there are sufficient number of these, then prohibit “fossil fuel based” ships from entering US ports.
While I applaud what Trump did, I still have my basic issues with him. Note that I did vote for him (3 times) and pissing off liberals is exactly what I voted for. But my issue here is first principles. Our first principles are straight forward – individual liberty, taxation is theft, all government is inherently evil and must be limited to the bare minimum, right to keep and bear arms, BFYTW, etc.
His first principles are (from what I can see) is it good for business?, does it make me look good?, and is it good for business AND makes me look good? That is very different from our first principles. It has lined up pretty good for us so far, but there have been some mis-steps in there. And if the UN magically comes up with a global tax that is good for business and makes Trump look good too (yes, I know, many many contradictions there), I’m pretty sure Trump would support it instead of telling them to fuck off.
The best thing the left can do is keep attacking him, which drives him further into our side. But at the end of the day he has his first principles and we have ours. I don’t know that he is inherently on our side or just keeps picking our side because it looks good. So yeah, we’ll see what happens.
Why don’t we just get out of the UN now? What, exactly, to we gain by staying in the organization? “A say in policy”? Bah. Withdraw and tell them to fuck right off, and stuff their edicts up their asses.
What of consequence have they ever achived in the real world without the US either quarterbacking the play or financing it?
Without us they’ll be a paper tiger, and we will continue to be a mover and shaker.
While we’re at it, and we still have both Houses and the Executive, pass laws against entering into this kind of BS again. I’d say go for an ammendment, but who knows what they other side would try to slip in.
Someone, please remind me what readily-available alternatives there are to fossil fuels? Are they suggesting we go back to the age of sail?
Yes, they really are. Think it was 2023 that there was a massive media hype about “the first sailing ship ever” as “the green future of international travels and commerce” or some idiocy like that being launched.
Message to the UN: We don’t do taxes.
And we don’t do electric ships either. Do these bureaucratic goons think we’ll give the world our nuclear powered ship technology and let a bunch of third world sailors operating them loose upon the world?
Don’t worry, a 20,000 ton battery won’t cut into cargo too much, and we can tie up to one of those ocean windmills for a month or so to recharge it. /sarc
