From One To Another

Unlike the Euros and Brits, we’ve actually had a couple of rainstorms here in Plano — to be precise, one yesterday and one the day before:  nice, long soaking rains.

Did all that cold water falling out the sky actually change anything?

You silly rabbits.  This is summer in Texas, where all the rain does is make the temperature go from 120F (oven) to 118F (sauna).  I hate both;  but I also didn’t win any of the recent lottery drawings, a pox upon them, so that little clifftop shack in Bar Harbor, Maine is still off the table.

  1. Now let’s talk about a Bar Harbor winter on the coast of the North Atlantic.

You’ll really need a “winter” residence. All those estates were built by rich folks who summered there to avoid simmering somewhere else.

And don’t even get me started on the summer tourist season effects.

I don’t have the nick Damnedyankee for nothing 😑

  2. Agreed — although that house is fully winterized and no doubt heated in the winter, it’s really only a 3 season place. It’s high enough off the water and on the somewhat more protected side of the island from the winter storms. But the big issue is that the island rolls up the sidewalks and closes everything from November 1st to May 1st. The place is a ghost town in the winter.

… and this year the summer tourist season was the most crowded I’ve seen on the Island in the 60 + years I’ve been going to our house on the other side.

…. and the description for the property mentions it claims near the Kennedy’s. No, there are no Kennedy Family estates on MDI. Sure, there are Rockefeller estates, Ford, lot’s of Philadelphia Main line families, and Beacon Hill Boston Families that have cities named after them, even some “New Money” people like Dick Wolf and Martha Stweart. But Kennedy’s …… No.

You didn’t really want that house anyway.

    1. Hello (sorta?) Maineiac person!
Mrs Damned and I spent part of our honeymoon there mid September back in the olden days, plus time spent there as a kid (sitting in traffic and looking at old rich people’s houses as I recall) when my mother would insist we drive down to Bar Harbor for the day from up around Machias way where my grandparents lived and she grew up.

Beautiful country, I have no problem putting a sweater on for the average 55 degree summer morning, but snow ain’t pretty any more three days after it’s done falling and promises to stay for another 4 months or so.

Still, if I could own such a place, I’d certainly consider doing it, but I have no illusions about it being my only residence!

  3. I spent 18 months in Vermont. It snowed before Halloween and didn’t melt until after Easter. Vermont’s economy was lousy and couldn’t wait to get out of there. NH is tempting with their laws and economy though.

Right before the ChiCom flu, the missus and I looked hard at land in NH. Either get a place on a pond and rent it out or get a multi acre place in the woods and have our archery range, 3D course, etc. Then the land or houses posted for sale on a Monday would be sold before the weekend and prices soared.

    1. Kim,
I dunno. Money makes people do crazy things and that crazy lottery could lead to some outright lunacy.
