Harry Gets Seduced

…by a beautiful little Alfa Duetto 1750 Spider.  And why not?  Is he going to buy it?

…and three years later, Mr. Metcalfe drives the Mille Miglia  course in it.  The bastard.  Why is he a bastard?

Because driving the MM corsa  is very much on Ye Olde Buckette Lyst (as I discussed here, its extension here, and a discussion on a “pairing” here), and I envy Harry.  A lot.

I would humbly suggest that watching the videos and reading (or re-reading) these posts is not the worst way to spend a couple hours on a Saturday.  Enjoy the adventure.

  1. Harry’s Garage is a favorite channel. He can be counted on for great content. The problem with actually entering the recreation event is that you need to drive a period correct car, if not one of the actual cars that were originally entered in the event. Thats why Harry is simply following the event instead of entering and driving in it. So driving in the MM is not only a bucket list event, it also means winning the lottery as well — plus it’s also an invitational event like Pebble beach.

    And when your done watching that one, here’s another recommendation. Donald Osborn entered the 2021 event and did this series.

    You could spend a lot of time watching Vidos on just the MM

    1. Just discovered this video from Harry. He wasn’t being completely forthright with his description of his participation in this year’s Mille Miglia in the Alfa. It turns out he did drive in the event for two of the days at the invitation of Mercedes Benz. You need to watch the video to see which cars he drove and who he drove them with.

  2. I had the other Italian Spider. a 76 Fiat 124 Spider with a 140hp 1800cc engine. It had a factory 8-track where the tape could only be removed if the transmission was in 2nd, 4th, or reverse.

  3. Mille Miglia by acetate (whatever):
    Find a copy of “The Green Helmet” (b&w, 1961);
    Then, there’s “The Racers” (1955)!

    1. In the 1950’s I learned to drive on a friend’s TR-3, and from him caught an enthusiasm for motor racing, and I could swear I read that masterful account of Moss’s incredible drive in the1950’s, maybe the 60’s.
      Thanks for bringing it back; I really enjoyed it again.
