  1. Yes. I’m reminded of the story of the pathfinder who, having been mortally wounded, radioed that the bombers should look for the red fire, not the white one.

    1. I read this in a SGT Rock comic book when I was 10 or so. It made quite an impression.

  2. My Uncle was in the American Eighth Air Force from about March 1944 to April 1945, most notably in the family, he was a radioman in a B-17 called, “The Brunswick Queen”, after the pilot’s wife. He also mentioned casually that prior to this he was in the Pathfinders and dropped flares ahead of the bombers to show where the target was. That was the only time he ever mentioned his war service.
