Goodbye Chile, Hello Venezuela

And another one bites the dust:

Wild celebrations have been seen across Chile after the country voted to rid itself of its dictatorship-era constitution left behind by Augusto Pinochet’s regime.
Chileans voted overwhelmingly in a landmark referendum on Sunday to replace the constitution, long seen as underpinning the nation’s glaring economic and social inequalities.
Thousands of people flocked onto the streets of Santiago amid a cacophony of horn-blaring to celebrate a crushing victory for the ‘Approve’ campaign – by 78.28 percent to 21.72 percent, with over 99 percent of the votes counted.

And its replacement?

People hope a new constitution would expand the role of the state in providing a welfare safety net, ensuring basic rights to health, education, water distribution and pensions.

Ah yes, an expanded state… [sigh]

And why not?  After all, they voted for it, despite the dismal track record of an “expanded state” failing everywhere it’s been implemented.

My post title says it all.

  1. Let them have the government they chose. But we’d better keep busy building the Wall, because we’re going to need it when things go ker-flooie, as they most surely will.

  2. The key line is this:

    > The result comes as a slap in the face for Chile’s political class,

As with Brexit, as with Trump, the political classes simply aren’t paying attention to the people.

I hope the Chileans will have the sense to design a good constitution. I’ve had a brief gander at the current constitution and am on page 24. So far it seems pretty anodyne. But it’s long.

  3. So the people of Chile have voted for an expanded state? Well, I’ll bet they’re going to get it, and they’ll get it good and hard.

  4. Another episode of the epic saga ‘Soros Bets’… catch-phrase “He wins if he loses!”?

      1. HEAR ME, BROTHERS, AS I RECOUNT THE GOOD NEWS FROM THE BOOK OF AUGUSTO, 5TH CHAPTER OF SIKORSKY VERSES 3-5…

“WHOSOEVER SHALL YEET A DIRTY COMMUNIST AT 3000 AGL FROM YE OLDE CH53 OVER A SUFFICIENTLY DEEP BODY OF WATER SHALL ACHIEVE THE GLORY, AND THE HONOR AND THE OTHER GOOD THINGS, AND THE ATTENTIONS OF BIG TITTIES REDHEADS…THE ONLY GREATER GLORY IS TO YEET SEVERAL COMMUNISTS FROM SAID NOBLE AIRCRAFT.”

That’s all I got, Christian School was 20 years ago.

    1. Let this be a lesson to those who advocate Pinochet tours as the solution to our problems. Problem is that part of the population who incline toward toward socialism. The only way to solve the problem is separation.

  5. As has been said elsewhere and many times has proven itself to be true: “You can vote yourself into communism, but you have to shoot your way out.”

  6. South Africa has one of those 180+/- page constitutions that RBG used to idolize. The reason these “modern” constitutions are so long is they encompass every left wing idea imaginable, with the goal of keeping those issues in the Courts rather than the ballot box. Now, the fact that they have such a voluminous Constitution on the shelf has not prevented the ANC from proceeding with their plan to confiscate the land of white South African farmers without compensation. RBG must be so proud!
