Not Fugly

…but FNugly:

And to describe one of the variants, an even newer word, FNuglier:

I am so sick of all these tacticool toy guns hitting the market.  (And yes I know, “It’s not a toy, Kim; you wouldn’t like to be shot by one.” )

If we’re going to make small carry pieces, can we go back to making guns which actually look decent, or at least look like real guns?

But I’m wasting my time, aren’t I?   “But Kim… look at all the cool feeeeeeeatures!  It’s even got a fredded barrel!”

Guns by Mattel… JHC.  At least revolvers still look real.

  1. While in USMC boot camp in 1975 one of my drill rifles was, I shit you not, made by Mattel.

    1. Drill rifles? In early 1971 we had M 14s that we drilled with and qualified with. I liked it so much I bought one. Pivoting back to Kim’s point, I understand the logic of plastic guns, but the first M 16 I shot was a POS, souring me on the concept. I have a “Modern Sporting Rifle” mostly because Andrew Cuomo said I couldn’t, but everything else is steel and wood.

      1. Drill as in the ones we were issued in 1st & 3rd phases which were just for use on the drill field (and for lots & lots of cleaning & familiarization). As opposed to the one we got in 2nd phase at the rifle range which we actually shot with. M16s all.

  2. That FN 509 is supposed to be a compact “carry gun.”

…but look at all of the pieces sticking out, just waiting to snag on something.

My M&P Shield 9mm is clunky looking, but it’ll come out of a holster when I need it to.

  3. I have to do the obligatory Obi-Wan quote this morning as I look at those beautiful Art Deco pistols “An elegant weapon for a more civilized age.” I just can’t imagine the Sean Connery “Bond, James Bond” carrying that ugly lump of plastic.

  4. Well, let’s be honest and admit that a big part of the current US gun market is about selling “tactical” weapons and accessories to feed the fantasies of middle aged men who like to pretend to be Navy SEALs on the weekend.

  5. Also that 2nd FN pistol reminds me of the saying I heard SOTI that goes “Flat Dark Earth is just pink for men.” 😀

  6. Elevated sights & threaded barrel? You can’t be a ninja warrior without a suppressor.

  7. I’ve always loved the looks of the HSc, and that FN is truly hideous.

Still, for concealed carry, I’d choose a truly ugly 9mm over the most beautiful .380 or .32 ever made – I’d just make sure it was concealed.

Note: there are somewhat less ugly small 9mm’s without all the tacticrap I’d choose over the FN.

  8. I never ever thought I would own a plastic, black gun but I finally bought a Glock 43 for my ‘go to church’ gun and much to my surprise that little 9mm shoots very well and I can hit where I am aiming which is the way any gun should work.

Large sights and red dots on small concealed pistols are ever so strange looking and really stupid.

  9. Well… I own some well-cherished wood and steel pistols and rifles. I love to take them to the range and lavish care and attention on them.

But, when the crazy ex of the crazy gf tried to beat down my door, I grabbed the biggest, ugliest, plasticiest, non-‘Murican, .40 cal pistol I owned. Form must follow function.

  10. I have hands that would make a coal miner proud. I’m afraid I would not carry any of these semi-autos simply because they’re too small. They look like I could maybe wrap two fingers around them; how do you control that? Big guns for big guys. As for any weapon, it should go “bang” when you want it to, the bullet should go where you intend it to, and if you can’t accomplish what you need done, no amount of rails or fancy sights, lights or threaded barrels is going to ease your situation.

  11. As the owner and frequent shooter of a S&W 3913NL , I am sympatico with your opinion on the fugliness of said FN. Elegance of form is not off-putting to the discerning shootist.

  12. My tastes in handguns are pretty close to Kim’s, but we own two S&W Shield 9mm (one original, and an EZ for the wife because she has arthritis). Why the ugly gun? Because if I have to plug someone here in the People’s Republik of Illinois (spit) it’s highly likely I’m not getting it back, or if I do how long it will take and what condition it will come back in.

I have no emotional attachment to that gun other than the cash I paid for it. The same cannot be said about my Colt 1911 (handed down from my father) or any of my revolvers. Also why my home defense shotgun is a stock Mossberg 500a.

That said, that FN is freaking ugly on steroids. If a Glock is akin to an ugly chick you might consider banging after eleven fingers of scotch, those FNs are trannies where the doc had an epileptic seizure halfway through the sex change and only managed to rearrange the Adam’s apple so it’s jutting out at a 30 degree angle to one side.

Now THAT, Gentle Readers, is how you phrase invective.

    1. Well, now owning a couple of Glocks I know know and perhaps might have done the thing of, the girls get prettier closer to closing time. Ya know sometimes you can drink them pretty but they gotta be womenfolk, don’t ya know?
